NFL, union extend deadline to solve differences

Buying time to try to close big gaps on big issues, the NFL and the players' union agreed Friday to extend the deadline for negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement by a week.

The current labor deal had been set to run out Thursday night. But the sides used an initial 24-hour extension to discuss and vote on the second, lengthier delay. Now the league and union will take a break over the weekend to assess their positions, resume mediation Monday, then have until the end of next Friday to talk.

"We're obviously having a lot of dialogue," Commissioner Roger Goodell said Friday, the 11th day that he and NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith have spent time at the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. "We met for a lot of days. And we are going to meet for more."

Although the seven-day extension is the first true signal that owners and players might avoid a protracted legal skirmish and work stoppage, it's clear they are not close to a new CBA.

"It's a challenge," NFL general counsel and lead labor negotiator Jeff Pash said. "We've got very serious issues. We've got significant differences."

Most significant: money.

One person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press that the NFLPA has not agreed to any major economic concessions — and that the NFL has not agreed to the union's long-held demand that the league completely open its books and share all financial information.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because mediator George Cohen asked everyone involved not to comment publicly on the substance of the talks.

No one would say whether yet another extension would be possible if no new deal is reached by next Friday.

While Goodell and Pash declined to discuss any details as they spoke to reporters outside Cohen's office at about 3 p.m., Smith did the same on a sidewalk in front of the NFLPA's headquarters about three city blocks away.

Referring to next week's round of bargaining, Smith said: "We look forward to a deal coming out of that."

But when asked whether trust between the sides has been rebuilt, Smith replied: "When you say something about 'trust' or when you raise issues about things like 'confidence' — none of those things are repaired quickly."

If the sides hadn't extended the CBA, the union was prepared to decertify Thursday, meaning it no longer would represent the players, who would be giving up their rights under labor law and instead take their chances in court under antitrust law. The NFLPA took that course in 1989.

The owners, meanwhile, could have locked out the players, raising the specter of games lost to a work stoppage for the first time since the players' strike in 1987.

"This is going to get resolved through negotiations, not through litigation," Goodell said. "So talking is better than litigating."

That willingness to continue meeting with the mediator certainly indicates neither side was ready to make the drastic move of shutting down a league that rakes in $9 billion a year and is more popular than ever. The last two Super Bowls rank No. 1 and No. 2 among most-watched TV programs in U.S. history.

Cohen said that since he began mediating talks Feb. 18, he has been able to encourage the sides "to fully, frankly and candidly talk to each other" and that they are having "constructive discussion."

The key issues all along have been:

— How to divide revenues, including what cut team owners should get up front to help cover costs such as stadium construction and improvement. Under the old deal, owners received about $1 billion off the top. They entered these negotiations seeking to add another $1 billion to that.

— A rookie wage scale, and where money saved by teams under that system would go.

— The owners' push to expand the regular season from 16 games to 18 while reducing the preseason by two games.

— Benefits for retired players.

Under terms of the seven-day extension, no player transactions will be allowed while it is in effect, and players' health insurance coverage will remain in place.

"There's been enough serious discussion to warrant both sides taking this step," Pash said after the extension was announced. He also said he wouldn't be surprised if team owners participated in mediation next week, a step that could indicate discussions were reaching a critical stage.

"It's time for us really to dig — to dig deep — and try to find solutions," Pash added, "and try to be creative and try to compromise in a way that will work for everybody."

Goodell dismissed the notion that the NFL became more willing to negotiate after Tuesday's decision by U.S. District Court judge David Doty that sided with the union in a case about whether the league can have access to about $4 billion from TV contracts. The union accused the NFL of improperly negotiating deals to have money available in event of a lockout, and Doty — who has jurisdiction over NFL labor matters under the old CBA — agreed.

Asked whether there is any truth to the idea that Doty's decision got the league back to the table, Goodell said: "No. We've been at the table."

And they'll be there next week.

Noted Goodell: "The fact that we're continuing this dialogue is a positive sign."

Gunmen kill 3 at bar near US consulate in Juarez

Two young men died at the Muro bar during the shooting around 1:30 a.m. and a third victim died after being taken to a hospital, said the spokesman for Chihuahua state prosecutors, Julio Castaneda. Two more men suffered wounds, he said.

The prosecutors office had not yet identified the victims, who were between 20 and 25 years old, Castaneda said.

It was the second attack on a bar in Ciudad Juarez in a week, he said. Five men were killed a week earlier at the bar La Brecha.

Fighting among rival drug cartels have turned Ciudad Juarez into a battleground in recent years. The city, which sits across from El Paso, Texas, has seen more than 6,000 people killed in drug violence the past two years.

Also on Sunday, Mexican authorities reported the arrest of a suspected high-ranking figure in the Sinaloa drug cartel.

A general in charge of a military garrison near San Luis Rio Colorado in northern Sonora state said police detained Julio Cesar Aguilar Garcia, known as "El Vaquero," or "The Cowboy."

The general says Aguilar is a suspected trafficker for the Sinaloa cartel's Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada. He is alleged to have directed air shipments of drugs in the Valley of Mexicali, near the Arizona border.

The general spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to journalists.

He said a traffic violation led to Friday's arrest of Aguilar and five others.

Grammy leader to meet with awards critic

Neil Portnow, chairman and CEO of the academy, and Steve Stoute, a former top music executive who now works in marketing, released a joint statement Thursday saying they planned discussions on how each side could better understand each other.

"This is a beginning, because Steve put his hand up and wanted to express his opinion, and I think the place to start is a few of us at the Academy," Portnow said in an interview Thursday night. "We'll see where that goes and that makes sense. I'm a collaborative person, the academy is always changing."

Stoute said in an interview that he wanted to see more diversity in the membership, culturally and artistically, and perhaps rule changes that would make certain genres eligible for more awards.

Stoute took out a full-page ad in The New York Times on Feb. 20 to take the Grammys to task. During the Feb. 13 broadcast, Eminem, who was nominated for a leading 10 awards, took home just two in the rap field and lost in the prestigious record, song and album of the year categories, despite having 2010's best-selling album with "Recovery" and one of the most popular songs with "I Love the Way You Lie" featuring Rihanna.

Another upset was the win of jazz singer and bassist Esperanza Spalding, who beat out more recognizable acts, including teen pop phenomenon Justin Bieber.

"I have come to the conclusion that the Grammy Awards have clearly lost touch with contemporary popular culture. My being a music fan has left me with an even greater and deeper sense of dismay, so much so that I feel compelled to write this letter," he said at the time.

On Thursday night, he said he was hopeful his conversations with Portnow and the Academy would provide real change.

"We're planning on working hard and really making a difference," he said.

Stoute, a former top music executive at Interscope who now runs his own branding and marketing firm, Translation, said he wrote the letter after years of artists' frustrations he had been hearing came to a head this year.

"They were concerned about the process in voting and how they were coming up with the nominations and the winners, and they wanted some clarity and some level of understanding," he said. "Their reaction was, 'Thank you for doing that for us, Steve,'" said Stoute. "I know the pain that they were going through."

Portnow said he hoped their dialogue would create better awareness and understanding.

"The place to start is that everybody understands what we do, how we do it, why we do it," he said.

Portnow defended this year's results, which included indie-rockers Arcade Fire's win for best album. He said their victory reflected how the Grammys have evolved over the years.

"Frankly, I'm not so sure 10 years ago where an Arcade Fire could have received a best album (award)," he said.

"This is not about popularity or about sales or even about notoriety, it's about excellence in music," he said. "That's why a Grammy means so much to an artist when they get one, because it's a peer recognition."

But Stoute said the voting Academy, which he said numbered 12,000, needed to be younger and more culturally diverse. He said he hoped that he and the Academy could push to get those demographics involved in the process.

He said some of those segments aren't an active part of the Academy because of years of frustrations.

"There's a segment of artists who have gotten so frustrated with what's going on that they felt like voting and being a part of trying to promote change wasn't going to make a difference," he said.

Stoute also said the Grammys need to reflect the changing way music is made. For example, he said songs with samples aren't permitted to be contenders for song of the year, which leaves out a lot of rap.

He stressed that he wasn't saying the wins of Arcade Fire or Spalding weren't worthy. However, he noted that Spalding had already released two other albums and technically, wasn't a new artist; the Grammys allow for people to be nominated although they have had albums released previously if their latest album represents a breakthrough year and they haven't released more than three.

He also mentioned that Arcade Fire, up for best alternative album, lost in that category yet won overall album of the year.

"They're not even the best in their genre, so how does that work?" he asked.

But Portnow said the Academy routinely looks at its own rules and adapts to the times; for example, this year, the Grammys changed the best new artist criteria so an artist who had been previously nominated for a Grammy but had never won could qualify; it was instituted after Lady Gaga was ineligible for the 2009 award because she was nominated for her first dance song the year prior.

Stoute said, despite the frustrations with the Grammys, they are still the pinnacle of achievement for a musician.

"It's not like people don't respect what the Grammys mean. The Grammy is artistic excellence, you just want to make sure that everybody in the music business gets a chance."

Rescue ends for man in abandoned Nevada mine shaft

BLM spokeswoman JoLynn Worley says the Battle Mountain man fell Wednesday afternoon in the shaft in Jersey Valley, about 160 miles northeast of Reno. His name wasn't immediately released.

Worley says rescuers tried to reach the man, who's about 190 feet below ground.

But she says the rescue was halted Friday because of the hazardous, dangerous conditions it posed to rescuers. She says the mine is so unstable that walls crumbled and rocks hit rescuers on the head when they tried to reach the man.

A video camera showed the man was still breathing early Friday, even though he has suffered serious head injuries.

Israeli-Arab leaders under fire for Libya visit

Known as loud critics of Israel's treatment of its Arab minority, they are now facing uncomfortable questions about their long history of cozying up to some of the Middle East's most authoritarian leaders.

"I cannot stop myself from feeling shame that assaults me every time I see my photographs with him," Hanin Zoabi, an Arab Israeli lawmaker who met Gadhafi, wrote in a local website.

Zoabi, like other members of the delegation, refused to apologize for last April's visit, saying it was necessary for Israeli Arabs to reach out to Mideast leaders and naive and impossible to ignore them.

The uproar has drawn attention to the state of Israel's Arabs, who account for about a fifth of the country's population of 7.6 million.

While Israeli Arabs are citizens with full voting rights, in contrast to their Palestinian brethren in the neighboring West Bank and Gaza Strip, they frequently suffer discrimination — in employment, education, municipal budgets and land allocation.

Many of Israel's Arabs openly identify with the Arab world, with lawmakers and civic figures frequently traveling to meet leaders in Arab nations hostile to the Jewish state.

In one extreme case, former lawmaker Azmi Bishara came under heavy criticism for visiting Syria and meeting President Bashar Assad and officials from the Lebanese guerrilla group Hezbollah. Assad is a bitter foe of Israel, who provides aid to Hezbollah and the Hamas militant group.

Bishara later fled the country after he was accused of spying for Hezbollah, which battled Israel to a stalemate in a month-long war in 2006. Living in exile, Bishara is now a popular pundit on Arabic language channel Al-Jazeera, where he urges Arab demonstrators to overthrow their regimes.

Among Arabs here, Bishara is still widely seen as a hero for confronting Israel. But the new photos of other Arab leaders — including religious officials and lawmakers — praising Gadhafi seem to be too much for their public to bear.

The photographs show delegation members posing beside Gadhafi, who wears black sunglasses, a turban, shiny brown pants and a shirt concealed by a darker brown wrap. The photographs, published on different Arab-Israeli websites, suggest some representatives took turns standing next to the Libyan leader.

Ahmed Tibi, a prominent Arab lawmaker, called Gadhafi "the leader of the Arab leaders, king of the Arab kings," according to an official transcript published on a Libyan government news website.

Tibi told The Associated Press his comments were taken out of context and the majority of his speech was devoted to criticizing the lack of educational and social progress in the Arab world — positions that have won praise in the mainstream Israeli media. Still, he didn't take Gadhafi to task. Tibi sent a copy of his speech to the AP.

As Gadhafi's forces continue a crackdown that has reportedly included firing on protesters and launching airstrikes on rebel positions, such revelations have sparked soul-searching in the Arab community. Some constituents accuse their leaders of hypocrisy that is harming their cause.

"If you hug dictators who oppress and kill their people — what's your moral position then?" asked poet Salman Masalha, who criticized the visits in a series of editorials.

Mohammed Zeidan, another delegation member, said many felt uncomfortable even at the time.

Minders prohibited them from leaving their hotels, telling them the visit — organized by Libya's ambassador to Jordan — was just to meet Gadhafi. They were instructed to call him "the brother, the leader."

They were flown out to the Libyan desert, then bused to a giant tent where they met Gadhafi. After fawning speeches by some delegation members — including radical Muslim leader Sheik Raed Salah — Gadhafi rambled for 40 minutes, Zedian said.

"He talked about Israel's nuclear power, but he said, 'You can challenge this by marrying two, three and four wives and having lots of children.' He said we could be a demographic challenge to their nuclear weapons," Zeidan laughed.

Some delegation members said they felt squeamish after the visit. Nonetheless, they said it important outreach to promote their plight.

"People tell us we should reach out to the people — not to the regimes," Zoabi wrote in a recent editorial. "Should we wait for democratic regimes to reach out and answer our call for opening relations with the Arab world?"

When I first started out and was taking a tutorial on setting up online marketing, the subject of blogs came up. It was suggested that a blog was a very good tool for marketing and making yourself known on the WEB. The program suggested starting with WordPress. I had never heard of WordPress so I went to the WordPress site to find out what it was all about.

This was all new to me so I followed instructions on the site and presto...I had my first blog set up in a few minutes. It wasn't pretty and I had no idea what I was doing. The interface was new, the tabs were a mystery and the general functions available were a guessing game for me. That said, I forged ahead, wrote a post and then tried out different tabs and selections to see what would happen.

What I didn't realize was that there are three varieties of WordPress, and you should know that upfront, so you can decide what works best for you. I learned of these 3 options later when I used another tutorial and set up another WordPress blog on a host site.

So what are those three options?

Option One

The first one I'll mention is one that doesn't concern the individual affiliate marketer but you should be aware of it. It's called WordPress MU. MU stands for Multi-User and it allows you to run several hundreds to thousands of blogs on one domain. It really applies to corporations, groups, organizations or maybe super affiliate marketers that have their own servers and run a network of blogs. Until you reach that scale you needn't know more than that about WordPress MU.

Option Two

The next option open to you is WordPress.com. This is the one I first used. It is hosted on WordPress servers and offers an easy to use template you can follow to start your first blog. You can choose your own user name to individualize your blog and it will get assigned to the WordPress domain. For example, if you choose to go with your name to set up the blog, your domain would look like http://www.yourname.WordPress.com. This assumes your choice was available.

Another point to remember is that on WordPress.com you are subject to the guidelines of your host. That means that commercial applications such as Google Adsense and other plug ins used to create revenue streams or optimize for search engine discovery, are not available. The blogs are really designed for open and useful communication without the volume of commercial and affiliate selling that takes place on other blog environments. This isn't to say that you cannot create links to affiliate programs and place some banners, but the WordPress.com blog is not the most optimum environment to run a marketing based business. The next option is best suited for that purpose.

Option Three

The third option is the one used by most affiliate marketers who set up their business on an independent hosted environment outside of the WordPress hosted site. It's called WordPress.Org and is software that is downloaded to your own Web server to run on your domain. It is often accessed through the Control Panel of the Web host you have selected to use in your business or blog. Some free hosting services may not offer the Control Panel feature so you have to follow what ever process they use for downloading blog software.

In the case of WordPress.org, the software offers greater flexibility that WordPress.com and allows you to download plugins that are not available to WordPress hosted blogs. For example, you can download Google AdSense ads mentioned earlier or Google Sitemap which allows search engines to find and index you more efficiently so you can place better in search results. You can place html code to more effectively design web pages for commercial application in affiliate marketing campaigns. In short, it offers more options and better capabilities for running a business than WordPress.com. It is the option that you will come to by default when setting up a blog from your host site. You will notice a different set of options such as a plug-in add on feature that is not available with WordPress.com. In summary, this is the option you will find most suitable for affiliate marketing. It gives you more ways to create revenue streams for a business.

Conclusion

Depending on your objectives for blogging, these are the three options you can select from when considering WordPress. There is plenty of documentation to help you with the details of how to use the features and tools offered in each option. The point here is to make sure you are aware of what is available so you can make an intelligent decision.

listen. When it comes to affiliate marketing, there are some things that
affiliates do that are a sure ticket to failure. And yet, they do them
anyway. It just boggles my mind. Well, if you don't want to end up as an
affiliate failure, you'll take my advice and avoid these things like the
plague.

At the very top of my list is the choice of the product itself. So many
affiliates jump on the "me too" product of the day and think that
because everybody is talking about the product that it's going to make
them a ton of money. What they don't understand is that these high
profile, high end products, are being promoted by every top marketer in
existence. Do you REALLY think that as a beginning marketer you have a
chance against these people? You certainly don't, especially if you make
any of the other mistakes on this list. However, to give yourself more
of a chance, don't jump on the product du jour.

Next on the list is ads. I marvel at some of the ads I see for these
products. Why do I marvel? Because they're all the same. The only thing
different is the affiliate link in them. Oh come on, you know it's true.
You write to the merchant, ask him to send you some ads, he gives you a
link to get your "affiliate tools" and you copy and paste the same ads
that everybody else is sending, changing nothing but the link. Yeah,
that's really going to make you stand out and get your share of the
sales...not. So for crying out loud, write your own ads.

Finally, there's the means of promotion that affiliates use. They either
use the most expensive forms, such as pay per click, where to get a
decent position you have to spend a buck or more per click, or they use
forms of promotion that aren't worth squat. Look, if you're trying to
fight the pay per click wars in highly competitive niches, you're dead.
The heavy hitters will eat you alive. And using poor sources of
advertising is a total waste of time altogether. There are great sources
of advertising and great advertising methods that won't cost you an arm
and a leg. You'll find some great info in my signature.

If you avoid these common affiliate mistakes, you can easily become a
successful affiliate marketer for almost any product at all.
